FAQs

How do I become a captain?

In consultation with division representatives, the Board approves all captains for the Competitive League.   The Board selects players who have demonstrated leadership skills, a dedication to the organization, and a commitment to promoting a safe and fun playing environment.  If you’re interested in serving as a captain, please reach out to your division representative!

Monkeypox guidance

DCPVL encourages players who are eligible to receive a monkeypox vaccine to consider getting vaccinated.  More information can be found at DC Health.

Financial assistance

DCPVL is committed to making volleyball accessible to everyone. If you are facing financial challenges that might prevent you from participating in DCPVL, please let us know and we will work with you to make sure you can play this season.

Parking & Metro access

The Brookland/CUA red line metro stop is roughly 12 minutes away (8 if you've had an iced coffee) from the gym.

Free parking is available at the gym on game nights.

COVID-19 protocols

The Board strives to create a safe and orderly process for the continuation of play during the COVID-19 pandemic. Below are the most recent updates to DCPVL COVID-19 Protocols.

All players who register and attend a Skills Exhibition night must furnish proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test. If you provide evidence of a negative test, the test must be taken within 72 hours.

During matches, a face mask will be optional but highly encouraged.

If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms we ask that you please not attend Skills Exhibition or season games and notify the Director of Players immediately.

COVID-19 Exposure Notification
All players are expected to notify the Director of Players (directly or through their captain or another Board Member) if they test positive for COVID-19.

We will continue to follow local DC government and Catholic University guidance and our protocols will evolve as conditions change.

If you have any questions about this update, please email Lauren MacGowens.

What rules does DCPVL play by?

You can find our league rules on our resources page.

What is the season format?

Here's the flow this season:

  • Skills exhibitions (sign up will be available here)
  • Captains draft teams
  • Team Announcement Party (info will be available here)
  • 8 weeks of regular season games
  • 1 week of guaranteed quarterfinals play (all teams qualify)
  • 1 final week of semifinals and the final (only teams that win quarterfinals qualify)

Matches start at 7:00 PM, 8:00 PM, and 9:00 PM

1-hour time slots: 5 min to warm-up, 50 min to play, 5 min to clear the court

Play 3 sets from 4pts to 25pts, win by 2pts, or capped at 27pts

How are teams selected?

Captains draft teams of 8 players. Players are not guaranteed to be drafted onto a team, but the registrations fee will be fully refunded if a team spot is not secured.

Before drafting, there are two optional Skills Exhibition nights players can attend to demonstrate their skills to the captains. While these are optional, we recommend players attend so that the captains and Board can get to know them and make sure they are placed in an appropriate division.

At these Skills Exhibition nights, players will be able to showcase a variety of skills, including serving, setting, passing, and hitting.  This may sound intimidating, but it's not!  Players are encouraged to come out and have a good time!

You'll be able to register for the skills exhibitions on the events page.
